Basic Portuguese Language Course for indigenous immigrants and refugees

Through July 18 to August 7, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am, an in person introductory course to basic Portuguese was provided by the Fraternity –International Humanitarian Federation (FIHF) and Visión Mundial (World Vision), in the facilities of the Indigenous Cultural and Training Center (ICTC).

The goal of the course was to give the students a basic knowledge of the Portuguese language – with a corresponding certificate – which is an indispensable prerequisite for obtaining a job, especially in Brazil, and also to ease daily life.

It was aimed at the Venezuelan indigenous refugees, and 20 students participated, all of them enrolled and qualified to deepen their study of the language.

We share below the comments of the teacher Everton, responsible for the training task: “I felt very warmly received both by the students and the staff of the Humanitarian Fraternity (FIHF). The setting is perfect, the people are very welcoming. I was very happy with the 100% approval rate of the classes, and saw that the students were also happy, because it seems their expectations were met,” he reflects.

Everton also says: “In this new group, I managed to obtain some information on the academic training some of them received, and I believe it will be a bit more challenging, because generally, students with academic experience are more critical, are going to want to ask more questions; and for me, that’s perfect and excellent. Therefore, I expect this group to have more questions in relation to what they’re learning, and I think it will also be more musical, because I see there are many students who identify music as something related to their culture, and I think this will be very strong in this next class.”

The student Ángel Silva also expressed himself in the following way: “firstly, I want to thank institutions like the HumanitarianFraternity (FIHF) and Visión Mundial, which monitored us during the course of our preparation. And today I’m happy and content, as an indigenous Venezuelan, because of having received this training, so we can have our own ideas and continue developing and going deeper into things at any time, which will be useful to us. I’m grateful, happy, pleased for having received my certificate, which I received today with pride, dedication and love.”
