Relevance of multilateralism and diplomacy for peace in the humanitarian world

In a troubled global scenario of growing worsening humanitarian crises, climate change and the multiplication of conflicts, the values of multilateralism and diplomacy for peace, expressed in the Founding Charter of the United Nations, are essential for building a fairer and safer world for future generations.

Multilateral agreements established after World War II have saved lives, expanded economic and social progress, and defended human rights.

In a paradoxical historical moment in which the global challenges are more interdependent, but the answers are increasingly fragmented, Friar Luciano, general manager of the Fraternity – International Humanitarian Missions (FIHM), reinforces the importance of the value of international cooperation for the common good.

“In the current world scenario there are resources and knowledge to meet the demands that arise, however, it is necessary that there is a greater commitment among all those involved in the humanitarian world, so that the solutions go beyond sectarian, political and ideological interests”, he points out.

Friar Luciano assesses that “it is necessary to reinforce dialogue and alignment between all humanitarian actors to achieve a better optimization of resources and, consequently, a response in shorter periods”.

To reinforce the actions of the Fraternity – Humanitarian Missions (FIHM) in the field of diplomacy for peace, the general manager of the organization highlights: “we are seeking to continue with the work that is done in the affiliate in Geneva, which is a work focused on interagency dialogue, diplomatic, so that we can not only understand everything we call the architecture of the humanitarian sector, but, especially, bring our example, our practice developed in different humanitarian missions”.

Strengthening multilateralism

Within the purpose of strengthening multilateralism, the Fraternity – Humanitarian Missions (FIHM), since 2011, develops its activities always based on cooperation, building and strengthening links and partnerships between national and international organizations, governmental and non-governmental, with cross-cutting values and  objectives.
