Humanitarian Training in Piauí

Members of Humanitarian Fraternity (FIHF) conducted a training with employees of the shelters for indigenous Venezuelans in Piauí

Through an initiative of the Ministry of Citizenship, a cycle of training is underway in the Northern and North-Eastern States of Brazil which host Venezuelan indigenous refugees.

Humanitarian Training

This cycle of training began in Terezina, capital of Piauí, on July 1 and 2, and included the participation of 35 employees of the Municipal Secretariat for Social Assistance and Integrated Policies (Semcaspi), Secretariat for Social Assistance and Citizenship (Sasc); of the SUAS Executive Secretariats and of Semcaspi’s Integrated Policies and Special Social Protection Management.

Humanitarian Training

Management and coordination of shelters, team structuring, public policies, rights of the indigenous peoples, Convention 69 of the International Labor Organization (ILO), and the building of lasting solutions were the subjects addressed during the two days of training provided by volunteer missionaries Imer and Ricardo Baumgartner, anthropologist Fernando Fileno, Fraternity – International Humanitarian Federation (FIHF), and the Senior Associate for Indigenous Protection and Solutions of UNHCR (UN Agency for Refugees), Sebastian Roa.

According to Imer, “this exchange of experience and sharing of knowledge was very enriching and can broaden the knowledge and sensitize the actors who work in the reception of the Venezuelan indigenous refugee peoples in Terezina.”

Besides the training, there were some meetings with representatives of the municipal and state public authorities, and a visit to the shelters that receive the indigenous refugees. According to the data of Semscaspi, there are now three shelters in Terezina that receive indigenous Venezuelans of the Warao tribe, amounting to more than 230 people.
