Life in the Shelters

With the worsening of the economic and social crisis in Venezuela, many Venezuelans are forced to leave their country of origin in search of the guarantee of personal rights of life. Many choose Brazil as the destination country in spite of the many obstacles, including the language.

The challenges faced by these immigrants during their journey are huge. As soon as they arrive at Pacaraima, the municipality that is located on the border of Brazil with Venezuela, many of the pilgrims are sent on to the shelters scattered throughout the State of Roraima, the majority of them in the capital, Boa Vista. One of those shelters is Nova Canaã, located in the neighborhood of Pintolândia, and is managed by the Fraternidade – International Humanitarian Federation (FIHF), through the Roraima Mission.

In the documentary “Life in the Shelters,” you will have access to the stories of the life of some of these Venezuelan immigrants who live in the Nova Canaã shelter. Among the people in this story there are children, mothers, and elders, who share dreams about a life of dignity, of being part of society, of having their rights guaranteed, of having official work with a formal contract, schooling for the children, and of entering into a process of internalization. You will also see how the work of the missionaries and collaborators of the Humanitarian Fraternidade (FIHF) is done.
