Activities carried out in the CCFI in the months of July and August

Headquartered in Roraima, in the city of Boa Vista, theIndigenous Cultural and Training Centre (CCFI), founded and managed by the Fraternity – International Humanitarian Federation (FIHF), continuously offers a great many activities for the migrant and refugee indigenous population, as stated in its Bimonthly Report.

In the months of July and August, the programming of courses, workshops and trainings occurred within the continuing education program, with a focus on promoting livelihoods and lasting solutions to make it possible for vulnerable indigenous people to have a chance to get on with their lives. Among these activities there is:

>> Continuing Education Program for Development (CEPD)

Fifteen students enrolled in the third class, while the exercises of the first and second classes continue to take place. Developed based on the observation of the needs of the immigrant indigenous public, the CEPD is made up of three phases: Welcome, Training and Development.

  1. Welcome: This tries to identify the interests, aptitudes, skills, and the market fields.

  1. Training

In this phase, the courses are made available to those interested. In this bimonthly there was:

  • Studying the Portuguese language: teaching 21 indigenous people in speaking, reading and writing.
  • Digital inclusion: advanced computer course with 10 graduates
  • Professional workshops: Sweets and Savouries, Haircutting, General and Cleaning Services

  1. Development

Here the following were addressed: Work – Socioeconomic Inclusion and Entrepreneurship, and Finance – Home Economics

Socioeconomic Inclusion – offered: guidance on labour rights and duties; preparing for work interviews; registrations and letters of reference for interviews and employment; referral for interviews and selection tests; participation in a contracting collective effort; suggestions of CVs; referral of CPD candidates, one of whom was hired.

Entrepreneurship offered:

  • Sales promotion workshop: how to market products;
  • Entrepreneurship Course; how to start your own business
  • Shoemaking Workshop: in practice, how to produce sandals
  • Integral Art Fair: five indigenous immigrant groups marketed their products
  • Practice and Production of Cutting and Sewing (dressmaking) in the Atelier of the CCFI
  • Inauguration of barbershop in the CCFI – spaces and equipment
  • Launching the Arintak Space – new counselling site for entrepreneurs

In the part on the strengthening the Indigenous Culture, the following was done:

  • “Vovó Barro” Course: experienced potters taught how to make clay containers
  • Traditional Medicine Workshop: the handling of medicinal plants for the production of medicines

The bimonthly also included some new initiatives, such as:

  • Counselling for indigenous organizations: new support line for indigenous associations and cooperatives
  • Activities with Indigenous Communities: visits to communities to encourage action planning

Also very important were the activities done with other organizations:

Projects that involve the expansion of dialogues and discussion of proposals to improve the social environments of the city of Boa Vista.

Among the supporting entities are A Casa Museum, the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF), the European Union, the Avina Foundation, the Rainha dos Apóstolos Agricultural School.

There are also interactions with governmental and non-governmental organizations, UN agencies, businesses and universities.

With SESC Mesa Brazil, food was collected and distributed; with UN Women, a dialogue was initiated on the Economic Empowerment of Refugee and Migrant Women.
