Activities of the Fraternity – Humanitarian Missions (FIHM) in the Sphere Administration Board

The Fraternity – International Humanitarian Missions (FIHM) was approved, through the representation of the general manager, Friar Luciano, as a member of the Board of the Sphere Association at the General Assembly held in April of this year. Friar Luciano, an individual member of the mentioned association, will become part of and collaborate in the Finances and Operations Committee.

The expertise acquired by Friar Luciano in the last 33 years dedicated to humanitarian causes, including integral development education for generating autonomy, as well as his activities in education in emergency projects with immigrants and refugees, and as the focal point of the Inter-Institutional Network for Education in Emergency Situations (INEE) in Brazil and Portugal, are examples of what will be offered for the development of the Sphere Association.

The Sphere Project is a non-profit association legally established in Geneva, in 1997, as an initiative of various humanitarian agencies with the main objective of improving the quality of humanitarian responses throughout the world.

To do this, it offers support to people involved in the planning, management and/or execution of humanitarian work, among them, collaborators and volunteers of local, national and international humanitarian organizations.

The project encompasses more than 450 organizations in some 65 countries and acts through networks of representatives and focal points.

Education in Emergency

Inclusion, participation and creativity are indispensable instruments when referring to education in humanitarian responses and emergency situations. To leave one’s country of origin seeking better living conditions can be profoundly traumatic. It is a leap into the unknown, and in that process, uncertainty and insecurity can leave deep impressions.

In contexts of conflict and displacement, children, adolescents and young people have more difficulty accessing education, just like those who are already excluded throughout the world.

To lessen possible traumas, facilitate access to learning and improve the activities in education in humanitarian responses, the Fraternity – Humanitarian Missions (FIHM) created the Education in Emergency Sector with a focus on three lines of action: Education for Overcoming Traumas, Communal Education, and Education for a Culture of Peace. Cross-referenced in these lines of action are the themes of Gender, Protection and Environment.
