Bahia Mission is scheduled to start on February 28th.

A group of 11 humanitarian workers travelled to Bahia on February 23rd to begin the Bahia Humanitarian Mission. They will meet with members of the local Light-Network in the region, making up a team of 15 workers for the operation. The idea is to provide support for the populations affected by the floods in the State, in this phase of the recovery and rebuilding of lives.

Humanitarian Bahia Mission

During the first few days, the details of partnerships are being finalized locally, as well as organizing the infrastructure for housing. The field intervention is scheduled to start on February 28th.

The Managing Committee of the Fraternity – International Humanitarian Missions(FIHM) has been monitoring the events related to the flooding since December of 2021.

According to data from the Bahia Civil Defense and Protection Superintendency (Sudec), the number of those affected by the rain is now more than 800 thousand people in 174 municipalities.

In this phase of the humanitarian response, the workers from the Fraternity –Humanitarian Missions (FIHM) will act as post-crisis support, at a time when there are families and people still in a vulnerable position. Due to the results of the flooding, many lost everything, and now need to rebuild their lives, inwardly and outwardly.

Together We Are Stronger

After the diagnostic trip was carried out, in which visits were made to locations affected by the floods and contacts were made with local, governmental and non-governmental institutions in order to establish possible partnerships in the response, this new stage of the Mission is focusing on consolidating partnerships, institutional contacts to coordinate details, defining strategies of action in the municipalities being considered, the organization of logistics, and housing.

So that all these logistics can be put into practice, the support of the BahiaLight-Network has been indispensable.

The Fraternity – Humanitarian Missions (FIHM) has already established a partnership with the NGO Mecenas da Vida (Life Supporters), which has provided space in its headquarters for housing the group in Serra Grande, district of Uruçuca, near Ilhéus. Besides the logistics support, there will be group operations mainly with affected farmers in the region, in partnership with the Quilombola de Itacaré Council, implementing activities that ensure self-sustainability and food safety.

Solidarity

The beginning of 2022 has already been marked by natural tragedies and calls us to solidarity and the care of those most in need. So that humanitarian workers can aid afflicted communities that are in a high state of vulnerability, we need your help!
